The photograph shown above is of the 1912 May Day parade going down 8th Street near Columbia Street (between Columbia and Carnarvon) in New Westminster, BC. The photographer was William Thomas Cooksley. Courtesy of the New Westminster Heritage website, New Westminster Public Library, Accession # 2187. Many more May Day photos are on the website.

According to the on-line description: The shop next to the Barber’s pole was Thomas Oven’s blacksmith shop at 39 – 8th Street.
The Boys’ Brigade is shown in front of a decorated horse-drawn carriage that most likely carried the May Queen and her court. The Boys’ Brigade traditionally were the honour guard for the May Queen.
