Walking
Tours at Mountain View Cemetery
Join us in the first of a new series of walking tours of Mountain View Cemetery
that will explore its history and rich culture. Mountain View Cemetery opened in
1886 and had its first burial in 1887. Since then, Mountain View Cemetery has
become the final resting place of almost 150,000 people. Each of them with at
least one interesting story…
Date: Sunday, August 23rd at 10:00am. Meet at the SW corner of 33rd and
Fraser St. and look for the big red flag. Tours will take place rain or shine.
Reservations are not necessary.
Two tours will be offered and both will leave at 10:00am sharp! Not to worry
about missing the “other” tour as more walks will be available through-out the
year.
Cost: $10.00 pp.
Tours will be led by:
John Atkin ( www.johnatkin.com )is
an author, and civic historian who organizes and conducts tours for groups and
individuals. John has explored Vancouver like few others have and offers an
interesting and offbeat insight to the city's architecture, history and
neighborhoods.
John’s tour “13 Mayors and Counting”, looks at the life and careers of many of
the city's mayors buried at Mountain View, including one who died looking for
gold in Alaska, another who committed suicide after losing an election, and the
mayors who have hosted royalty.
Lorraine Irving of the BC Genealogical Society (www.bcgs.ca/) has enjoyed
walking in old cemeteries since she was a young child and would ride her bike to
the cemetery on Mayne Island. For fun, she copied the inscriptions on the old
monuments.
Lorraine’s tour will include the first official burial in the cemetery of an
infant, the murder of a police officer, the largest monument in the cemetery,
the first mayor and a monument for firemen killed in the line of duty. A
cemetery is a window to the past. Come for a walk and share some stories of
early Vancouver.
Look out for our next walking tour scheduled for the Fall. Information will be
posted at www.vancouver.ca/cemetery
.
