About Us

Welcome to the British Columbia Genealogical Society

The British Columbia Genealogical Society (BCGS) welcomes you to our new website. The site is intended to provide easy access to information about the Society and upcoming events, both locally and throughout the Province of British Columbia and beyond, and to the specific services and resources offered by the BCGS.

Most of our members live in BC, but there are members from across Canada, the United States and internationally. A truism about our resident members is that many are relatively new to B.C. and much research time is devoted to tracking ancestors and living relatives across North America, Great Britain and many parts of Europe. Consequently, several special interest groups are operational within the Society.

  • Canada (general)
  • Metis
  • Scotland
  • Quebec
  • First Nations
  • Wales
  • Maritimes
  • United States
  • Scandinavia
  • Prairies
  • England
  • Europe
  • British Columbia
  • Ireland

A primary focus of the Society is to give individuals and groups the necessary skills to carry out their own research. We do this through our regular monthly meetings, special interest group meetings, computer offerings, genealogical chats, and through our 16,000 volume Surrey Library. The website will introduce you to all these resources!

We encourage both individuals and groups to join the BCGS. Membership brings many benefits, the least of which is the face-to-face network of over 400 members with hundreds of years of combined research experience, all of whom are anxious to share their knowledge and experience.

Everyone is welcome to come to any session sponsored by the Society as a guest. We hope you find enough interest to join the Society.
