Vancouver Province Roll of Honour, 1929
In May of 1929 the Vancouver Province ran a list of early subscribers in a Roll of Honour over several weeks in the Sunday newspaper. There were full page lists of name, address, date when the person came to BC and the year they started to subscribe to the Vancouver Province.
The first list of two full pages was published May 12, 1929, and more over the following Sundays, May 19th and May 26th, for a total of six full pages of names.
Many hundreds of other subscribers have written to the Province, stating that they have been regular readers of this paper for periods varying from three to nineteen years, and requesting that they be sent Pioneer Honour Roll Certificates when they shall have completed the twenty year period as readers. Their names have been recorded and their wishes will be met in due course.
There are over 2700 Vancouver Province early subscribers from around British Columbia on this list which has been indexed by British Columbia Genealogical Society member Alice Marwood.
The earliest date in BC a subscriber reported was 1844. A good number of people reported being subscribers since 1898 when the paper moved to Vancouver from Victoria and began publishing as a daily1.
