BCGS continues to attract new members each year, but lapsed memberships have outnumbered those gains. Those of us ‘in the know’ realize that everything is NOT on the internet and new members can take advantage of our extensive library resources as well as our knowledgeable and helpful members. In 2003, the BC Genealogical Society raised its annual membership fee from $35 to $45. Because the fee increase resulted in a large number of lapsed memberships, the Board has been leery of raising fees again.
However, in the intervening 16 years, virtually all of the Society’s operating costs have continued to increase. These costs can only be covered by our membership fees.
Where does all the money go?
We are one of very few remaining societies to maintain a functioning genealogical library. 95% of our annual budget is spent on the library. These costs include maintenance and necessities such as hydro, telephone & internet, strata fees and insurance.
As of September 2019, our library catalogue has grown to more than 18,000 books and periodicals. All library services are provided by the hard work of 98 library volunteers, under the direction of Library Administrator, Corrine Jubb. Not one cent is given to any volunteer for their many hours of dedication. Donations from individual members, ranging from $10 to $1000, have been an invaluable source of funds. Two years ago, the Society received $5,000 from the estate of Billy Williamson , a long time BCGS member. This money was allocated for the BCGS website. The website provides both distance and local members with digital resources exclusively in the Members’ Area.
Our largest single source of extra funds is annual donations from members who add a donation when they pay their membership fees or who donate a substantial amount annually.
