A Harvest Festival is an annual celebration that occurs around the time of the main harvest of a given region. In India, given the differences in climate and crops, dates for Harvest Festivals
In Southern India, Pongal is a four-day harvest festival during which a different deity is worshipped each day. In Tamil Nadu, which is where this postcard was printed and perhaps taken, harvested rice is ceremonially cooked. In Karnataka, the festival is called ‘Sankranti’, and, like on this postcard, the cattle are decorated and fed on Pongal, which is a sweet preparation of rice. Later in the day, the cattle are led out in procession to the beat of drums and music.
