This notable project first came to the BCGS’s attention in March of this year. In honour of the 75 th Anniversary of Netherlands Liberation Day – May 5, 2020 – the project’s intention was to honour World War II soldiers who fell and are buried in the Canadian War Cemetery in Holten, Netherlands . They would do this by interviewing relatives or friends of the soldiers to gather more information (direct interviews, letters, photos, newspaper clippings, diaries) on their family member. BCGS was one of the societies that was contacted as there are 81 soldiers listed at Holten who were born or lived in B.C.
A committee was formed through BCGS members who voiced an interest in being a part of this and each member chose a soldier or soldiers who they would research.
BCGS has very recently heard from Holten Cemetery to say that they had a great response to their project and have set up interviews in a number of provinces. Because of the huge response they are unfortunately not able to plan more visits to any other provinces but are extremely appreciative of all the information and support they have received.
They are still interested in any information that can be found for any of the soldiers, which will be added to what they already have. For some soldiers there is some but for others there is none or very little. The BCGS Holten Cemetery Project committee will continue their research and invites anyone who is interested in joining this committee to please e-mail Melissa Borgerson at firstname.lastname@example.org
