Denyse Beaugrand-Champagne, historian, archivist and professional genealogist has researched different cases for the Canadian, American and British version of the series Who Do You Think You Are? and it's Quebec version Qui etes-vous? In 2004 she published the results of many years of research on the trial of a Black slave in Montreal in 1734 and she is Research Co-director of the official website Torture and the Truth. Angelique and the Burning of Montreal one of the Great Unsolved Canadian Mysteries Series.

Topic: Slavery in New France and the Trial of Angélique

This presentation will address the presence of Native and Black slaves in New France through archival documentation (texts and illustrations) and will introduce you to the trial of a Black slave accused by public rumour of being the cause of a terrible fire in Montreal. Angélique was tortured with brodequins and publicly executed on June 21, 1734.
